On the search for quality in Qigong

By Jürg Schmid

Someone who asks about quality in Qigong will probably be met with a counter-question: what do you mean by quality? The multifaceted nature of Qigong hardly permits a
generally applicable answer, but instead demands serious thought that goes beyond the assessment of forms and effects. In his own examination of the theme, Jürg Schmid has arrived at a division between the normative requirements – for him knowledge of the three pillars of Qigong and their proper application, the understanding of Qi, yin and yang and the five phases of change and in particular a familiarity with the history and the
philosophical background of Qigong – and a sense of well-being that can only be
experienced subjectively. This examination became a process that began with a practical attempt at definition and ended with the spiritual quest for quality.
