An integrative approach to movement therapy with MS patients.

Perspectives for use of elements of Qigong.
By Rudolf Schmittmann and Dr. Irmela Wirths

Although the health-promoting effects of Qigong are beyond doubt, it is only very seldom included in the official therapeutic treatment programme of clinics in Germany. As part of a sport-therapy programme for MS patients, Rudolf Schmittmann had the opportunity to introduce Qigong exercises. This was originally in response to a problem: how was it possible for a very heterogeneous group in terms of movement ability to practice together? It transpired that the Qigong methods were effective in training a stable posture, certain functional movement patterns and body perception, as well as helping group integration and improving the overall sense of well-being. Together with Dr. Irmela Wirths, Rudolf Schmittmann describes the methodical differences between Qigong and conventional sports therapy and the special approach to the patients, much of which can also be transferred to other syndromes.
