The Five Levels of Development in Taijiquan
By Chen Xiaowang

In the previous edition of the Taijiquan & Qigong Journal Chen Xiaowang described the first two of five levels of development traditionally differentiated in Taijiquan. The three levels which now follow describe an already very advanced level of Taiji-Gongfu. After having learned the outer formal movements and after having reduced blockages in the body and co-ordination problems between inner and outer movement at the first two levels, a free flow of energy should have occurred. At the third level movements can be synchronised with breathing. The development goes from large circles in the circulation of energy to medium sized circles. At the fourth level it continues towards small circles. Energy flow is markedly increased so that fighting capabilities reach a high level. Not only can attacking powers be neutralised, but ones own power, moreover, can be effectively directed outwards towards a target. At the fifth level these abilities increase further, all movements are in complete harmony with the Taiji principle.
